It has also come to my attention that the watchdog is disabled once the RESTART limit is reached; restarting the LK4 or pressing the SAVE button in the web interface are the only ways to get it to start functioning again.
The LK4 is no longer protecting the device; the watchdog remains disabled in the present situation, regardless of whether you resolve the disconnection problem.
I would not recommend this.

When the watchdog is turned on, the ping should run constantly indefinitely; only when you hit the limit will it stop (if any).
Following the resolution of the disconnection issue, the connected device will once again be automatically protected by the continually running ping. The restart counter should be reset to zero upon the first successful ping. After that, everything should continue as usual.
